My Snaplab appraisal, Feb 09, 2007
reviewer: Chris Olney T/A CKO PHOTO
from Dorking, Surrey.
I have just purchased this nice little product to give a bit of a boost to my simple photo shop business. With the photo retail changing, and the sad decline of film, this unit seems to fit the bill.
On first impressions, it is a neat and compact unit but why this awful blue? Silver or a less feminine colour would have been better. The unit is easy to work with a more complex side to it amongst the features contained therein.
One can master most of the functions within a couple of days of using it and not wasting any paper. The instruction manual is easy to understand and logical. When printing, leave all the colours, lightness and satuaration levels to 'neutral' and this will suffice for most images and produce them more or less the way you see them on the camera. Possibly a change in contrast can boost it's vibrance for the better.
The machine is noisy! It sounds like the binmen in the morning at a Spanish hotel at 3AM! That and the colour is my main gripe. The cleaning paper and ribbon (the sticky flat pad) baffles me a bit, but I have only had the machine two days.
When the rep. came around, I queried the cost of the replacement 6x4 paper reels. At 0ver £50 for 400 print capacity it is rather steep, but that's dependant on what one charges for prints. One has to be competitive, and this means cutting margins to compete with other local traders like Boots the Chemist (UK). I charge 0.45p a print and 0.99p for an index print. It will take a while for me to get a profit on this machine, but an on board tally will help me keep track of my take.
When I first saw the machine and what it did, I guessed how much it would cost and how much I would be prepared to pay. With a finance option, it makes more sense so as not to eat into my working capital. I guessed correctly, so it is fair to say that in my opinion, it is not overpriced, only the consumables are costly which the rep. told me would go down over time. I thought this was a probably not the case if the machine proves a good seller. Lets wait and see.
I have not looked at any alternatives, but guess that if there are, they will all be around the same price. This will suffice for now and seems to work well, especially at around 14 seconds for a photo. Customers can be very impatient!
