Nice printer, perhaps there is gold in the ink?, Jun 27, 2007
reviewer: Carla/consultant from London

I think I've replaced the ink 4 times in the last 12 months, and my old HP Laser took a new toner twice in 12 years. So I get color with the Pixma, but I can't afford it anymore. Wish there was a way to print with one black cartridge only, or a 'save ink' setting that would dispense it more gingerly for docs vs. photos.

I have yet to get a single decent picture out of this thing. Every single picture is streaked, even after multiple head deep cleans and using canon paper.

Do not buy.

If you don't mind rape, pillage and loot . . ., Jan 13, 2007
reviewer: Dick C. (ret) from US

The Cannon Pixma i4200 is not a bad printer. But when the cost of two sets of ink cartridges - that's TWO SETS - exceeds the cost of a new printer you know that corporate greed has gone off the charts.
And, in an attempt to guarantee their rapacious profit margins, Canon have even added a microchip to each cartridge so you can't use a reasonably priced compatible type. You either have to pay for your mistake of buying this travesty or go through the major hassle of trying to remove and switch the microchip to a compatible cartridge so it will work.
I don't care how well the printer works, when a company demonstrates such dedicated lust and willingness to swindle opners who bought the i4200 without being told of these machinations, then you know it's time to switch to another brand of printer.
Too bad, Canon, you had chances to build a reputation and a fair profit margin and you blew both chances.

The detail is breathtaking, excellent for brochures using double sided matt photo paper on standard mode, good even on normal or gloss paper for proof prints. Lovely warm tones and superb detail on high mode.

Prints super photos and other facilities e.g sleep mode are good, I am glad I bought it

Very fast & excellent results, though can take a while to print first page, as it goes through a cleaning process? Have yet to try duplex function + it has 2 paper trays, selectable by print menu or button on machine, prints on photo paper are virtulay as good as lab prints

Excellent printer - good value for money but compatible consumables not readily available and Canon OEM cartidges expensive

Excellent photo printer. The internal paper tray and the duplex printing facility are great too.

Easy to use and good quality prints

An easy to use general purpose printer, with top and bottom loading tray. Ink cartridges are a doddle to change. It has the connection to print pictures direct from the camera, never used it my self, but if your camera has edit function, you could do with- out a computer. If you are into music, like my two boys you may find the CD printer adapter rather handy for printing off those CD covers. The software that comes with the printer is easy to use, and follows a logical process in selecting your image, choosing paper and size and print quality. Print quality is very sharp and colours are bold and bright. Like most home users, you can't always match colour to what you see on screen, but the Canon isn't far out. My only quibble is the start of the image selection, if you tick a thumbnauil to print and do not uncheck it when you go to print another choice, you end up printing the first image again. A bit annoying until you get used to it.(But life's not perfect) I must admit I only use mine to print contact sheets. The canon does not like printing direct from Photoshop. You end up with what looks like ridges on the print. To get the best out of it you need to save the picture and open it and print using the "Canon Easy print" software provided by canon. A nice sold printer well worth the money, you won't be disappoited.
