Epson R300 Printer--Malpractice!, Jan 30, 2007
|

With the color cartridges off and printing only with black, all the color cartridges' ink volumes decrease at the same rate as the black. When the black is empty, all cartridges need replacement.
Tech "support" was programmed to blame the problem on the consumer. It's blatently obvious that the only programming is the printer's lust for making more money on unnecessary ink cartridge replacements. I believe there was a settled class action suit based on this problem; one about which tech support has been hushed.
If a doctor was responsible for this type of practice, he would confess to malpractice and give up his license.
Espon products-never again.

Solving "Some parts have reached the end of their service", Jul 13, 2006

The message telling you that some parts have reached the end of their life and to refer to the manual (IE take it for an expensive service) can usually be over-ridden by holding down the START, STOP and MAINTAINANCE keys for up to about 10 seconds (while switched on -obviously!). After this you should get a bleep, the message window clears and asks you to switch off the printer. I hear that this is a built-in 'feature' (ha) based on the number of times you have cleaned the print heads, which is supposed to coincide with the excess-ink pads becoming soaked to capacity. Mine did this after just a few months of regular domestic printing. No way were the pads full. I use a continuous ink system and wonder if this is some sneaky way of Epson getting at people who use such systems instead of buying their expensive ink. In searching for this solution i found people who had nevertheless carefully taken apart their printer and cleaned these pads anyway by soaking them in warm soapy water until they ran clear (wear rubber gloves!) and others who had found a utility that will reset the counter responsible for shutting you out of your own machine.
Imagine being halfway round a safari park when your car decided that it wasn't going any further until it got a service!

Get the extended warrranty, May 30, 2006

I liked the features of direct disc printing. However, now I got an indication, light flashing, for a cartridge repalcemnt. So I decided to replace all 6 ink cartridges. Now printer does not print at all. I emailed Epson for help and told me to do the same thing the instruction manual to do, "Clean print heads and nozzle check". The printer still is not working. I wish I got the extended warranty.

My Epson Stylus R300 has out of the blue decided to take it upon itself to cancel every print job automatically before anything is able to print.
It also stopped printing anything black for a few weeks, randomly, then corrected itself.
Very unreliable indeed.

I love this printer! I print a lot of DVDs, and the image quality on the printable discs is amazing. Seems to hold out well to all the printing I do... The only thing I don't like, is that I've had to replace it once already (in the 1st yr warenty) because of a paper feed that broke, and currently the CD tray keeps getting stuck

I found this machine very useful and straightforward in printing photos straight from a memory card; very good colour reproduction. Clear print when reproducing from scanner or printing from the pc. On the down side, I find that it is a little temperamental when it comes to ink supplies; I read the instructions and comply to the best of my ability. But when ink runs out in the middle of a task, it is very frustrating when having to go to instructions again and again to ensure that you are getting the procedure correct when on a first and second attempt the printer fails to work because "Ink Empty" is still showing even though a replacement has been installed. But on the whole I find this printer to be the better of the two I own. Regards, Neil.

i have had 2 of these printers and both of them have stopped working without warning with the message "SOME PARTS ARE PAST THEIR SERVICE DATE".This means a long trip to a repair centre for a 5 minute expensive reset. For me this means bye bye Epson as it has happened to me twice one while the printer was under warranty and once when it was just out.PC World would not even look at the model still under warranty because of the error message despite me quoting the sale of goods act and because I had a large stock of ink for my printer and was in the middle of an important project I was forced to buy a replacement so as not to waste the ink. This did not come from PC World though.

this is a good little printer let down by its ink cartridges, they cost a fortune! Refilling is a no-no because of the chip technology & resetters I have tried to use dont work!

Had the printer several months and not had any problems at all.. This printer replaced the 2 Dell 720's that I have had..(never again) The R300 was my choice this time because I don't use it that much but, it does offer, Instant expanded memory readers, photo printing without the pc, CD/DVD printing direct, individual/cheap ink cartridges which are just right for my own recording cd's that I have produced. Sometimes one colour is depleted more than the others (sometimes by choice).. Overall I'm pleased with this machine and will continue to rely on Epson's machines even when this one breaks down.. And for what it costs, at a later date I can always add the photo preview screen which are still on sale in a few shops (Dixons etc!)

Slow to print text but produces great photos, which is what I got it for. The ability to print direct from the camera's memory card and to print onto discs seemed a good idea when I was choosing this model but in practice I have never used them. Also the print image matching system does not work if you use Adobe to tweak your pics so another thing I didn't need! However the price of the printer makes it a bargain. The six separate inks are also theoretically cheaper to maintain.

This is the next model up from the R200, I chose the R300 for the additional inputs, which are the memory cards, and I never use them - so should have bought the R200, however it does have full USB 2 which is quicker than the R200 which is USB 1.1. All that said, I really like the quality - when used with Genuin Epson Ink the print is fantastic. I chose this printer for it's edge to edge photo quality and that it will print onto CD and DVD printable disc's and I have not been disappointed. Buy either the R200 or R300 and you will be pleased.
