Better Get the Service Contract!, May 10, 2007

This printer cranks out nice prints--until the thermal head starts to
fail. Then you get streaks, no make that stripes of light areas. The
thermal head costs $750 US to replace after 20,0000 prints. Thats
about 3 cents per print, just for the thermal head. And when I
asked what's the normal life, the repair center told me just 10,000
prints. That's crazy!

I have no association with Sony, their marketing or any company selling Sony. I will however say that I have owned a UPDR-150 from it's release and to date it has performed without issue. The loads i have put it to have varied from one off prints to approx 170 in 10 hrs. One vent saw me sending 20 prints at a time to the printer. in this instance the printer did pause occasionally displaying the message - waiting for the head to cool - it was a rather hot day...
The printer even survived falling from a desk approx 2ft onto a frame and then the floor (in my event trailer as i didn't expect it to move!!)
So I give it a thumbs up

We have used this unit for small events (with a portable studio) and in the office for small batches of promotional material. We've not experienced any problems with it.

[Editors Note: This printer was not supplied by System Insight] I have been using this print unit since April 2006. It has been used on events where it was expected to output approximately 800 over a 24 hour period, and on a portable portrait setup where prints did not exceed 50 in an evening.

It started off extremely well, and I was pleased with the output quality. However, within a short time we were experiencing issues with it.

Whilst we were printing out a run of approximately 150 prints, we noticed that the door was moving away from the main body of the printer. It turned out that the locking pins that the door catches hold were bending.
The sum result of this was that we were getting prints out of the printer which had broad white bands down the sides of the print. The centre did have a section of the image, but it was criss-crossed with tiny white lines as well.
We discovered that the bending of the pins was allowing the paper to curl whilst under the print ribbon, and thus not take any of the image.
We borrowed another unit from another event, only to find out it had the same problem!
Then we had problems with dust - even though it was stored in a closed room with no windows, it could still collect dust inside the unit to deposit on the images.
Frequent cleaning became the norm.
The unit went back to the supplier for service /repair, and we had a loan unit from them to use in its place. That also had the problem with the bent locking pins.
After it was returned we bagan to us it as part of our portable studio setup.
It then developed a line down the right hand side of the images. I could not find anything to cause this - so it went back again.
After its return for the second time, we finally had a unit which performed properly.
However, I have just noticed that once again we are getting the 'bent pins' situation.

Based on my experience with this unit, I could not honestly recommend it to anyone.
I consider that it is a flawed design which needs to be addressed by the manufacturer.
